You rent, so drilling outside is not an option. The camera sits on the windowsill and looks out through the glass. In daylight the picture is fine. At night it turns into a white blur, or a mirror of your own room, and the street disappears.
The camera is not broken. It is lighting the window, not the street.
Be honest about the result. Without the camera's infrared, a dark street stays dark. You get color night video only where some light already falls. If the spot you care about is fully dark, a light on it will help more than any camera setting.
AI Vision Monitor works differently from a motion camera. A spare phone sits on the windowsill. On a schedule you set, from every few seconds to every few minutes, it takes a still photograph, and a vision model checks it against one sentence you wrote, instead of a motion zone:
A phone has no infrared illuminator, so there is nothing of its own to bounce off the glass. It uses the street light that exists. When the sentence matches, you get a push notification with the snapshot and the model's verdict in words, and the phone can turn on its flashlight, play a siren or play a voice line you recorded. What you get is a photograph plus a short answer, not a live stream.
The usual setup is an old phone used as a camera:
Checks are paid for one at a time. The starter pack is 2000 credits for 2.99 euro, and a check costs half a credit on the light model or one credit on the fast model. New accounts get 50 free credits without a card. Limit the schedule to the night hours that matter. There is no subscription.
Why does my camera show only a white glare through the window at night?
At night the camera turns on its infrared LEDs. The glass reflects that light straight back into the lens, so the camera lights up the window instead of the street. Turn the infrared off and press the lens against the glass.
Can a security camera see through a window at night?
Yes, if its own infrared is off and there is some light outside, such as a porch light or a streetlight. With infrared on, the glass reflects it and the picture turns white.
Does double-pane glass make it worse?
Yes. Each pane reflects, so you get two glare spots, slightly offset. Pressing the lens flush against the inner pane and blocking light around it removes most of both.
What if the street is completely dark?
Without the camera's infrared, a dark street stays dark. Put a porch light or a motion light on the spot, or accept that the window camera only works where some light reaches.
Can I use a camera behind glass as a renter?
Yes. Nothing is drilled and nothing goes outside. A camera or a spare phone on the windowsill, on a charger, is usually allowed, but check your lease if you are unsure.
Will an old phone work behind a window at night?
Yes, as an alert camera where there is some light. A phone has no infrared illuminator, so nothing bounces off the glass. It checks snapshots, not continuous video, and it sees nothing on a fully dark street.
Put a spare phone on a charger on the windowsill, lens against the glass, black cloth behind it, and write one sentence about someone at your car or on your steps at night.
