Elderly Parent Not Eating When Alone: How to Know if Lunch Happened

When the family sits down together, an older parent eats a full plate. On ordinary days, alone in the house, lunch turns into a slice of toast or a cup of tea. You live elsewhere and cannot tell whether a real meal happened.

Why a meal for one drifts into toast and tea

Cooking for one takes almost the same work as cooking for four, without the reason most people cook at all: someone to eat with. After a partner dies, especially the partner who did the cooking, the kitchen can stop feeling like a place where meals happen.

Things that help with no technology at all

When to talk to a doctor. Weight loss, trouble chewing or swallowing, or forgetting how to cook a dish they have made for years are not habits. They are reasons to book an appointment.

Knowing about the ordinary days without ringing to ask

The hard part is the ordinary days between visits, when asking every day starts to feel like checking up.

AI Vision Monitor turns a spare phone, or a camera that is already in the house, into a check you describe in a sentence. The phone stands on a shelf in the kitchen, plugged in, pointed at the table. On the schedule you set, the app takes a still photograph and a vision model answers your sentence in plain words. There is no live feed to watch.

Between 12:00 and 14:00, someone is sitting at the kitchen table with a plate of food in front of them.

That rule can work in either direction. It can send a quiet message when lunch happens, or it can stay silent on normal days and tell you only when the usual lunch never showed up:

Tell me if by 14:00 nobody has sat at the kitchen table with a plate of food today.

With the second version, most days nothing arrives. A message means none of the lunchtime checks saw a meal, which is the day to ring.

Setting it up

  1. Find a spare phone with a working camera. It needs wifi, not a SIM card. If there is already a wifi or RTSP camera in the kitchen, it can be connected through the free companion app for a computer instead.
  2. Stand it where it sees the table and the person sitting at it, and leave it on a charger.
  3. Write the sentence. The app takes a test photograph and shows you what the model says before you rely on it.
  4. Choose where the message goes: push, email, or a shared Telegram or Discord channel so brothers and sisters see the same message.

There is no subscription. New accounts get 50 free credits without a card, enough to try a lunchtime check before deciding.

Frequently asked

Why does my elderly parent eat well with family but not when alone?
A meal for one takes the same shopping, cooking and washing up as a meal for four, without the company that made it feel worth the effort. Toast or tea needs no preparation. It is usually habit rather than illness, but it tends to drift slowly, so it is worth watching.

How can I know if my elderly dad is eating when I do not live nearby?
Start with a lunchtime phone call while you both eat and a look in the fridge when you visit. For ordinary days, a spare phone pointed at the kitchen table can check at lunchtime whether someone is sitting there with a plate of food and send you a short message.

Can a camera tell me how much he ate?
No. It can say that a person was sitting at the table with a plate in front of them. It cannot say how much was eaten. Treat it as a sign that a meal was sat down to, not as a food diary.

Can I be told only on the days lunch did not happen?
Yes. The rule is written in plain words, so it can report the exception: tell me if by 14:00 nobody has sat at the kitchen table with food. On most days nothing arrives.

Does my parent need to use a phone or an app?
No. The phone in the kitchen stays plugged in on a shelf and nobody needs to touch it. The alerts arrive on your phone. Your parent does need to know about it and agree to it.

Is this a medical or emergency service?
No. It is not a medical device or a fall alarm, and nobody is on the other end. Weight loss, trouble chewing or swallowing, or forgetting how to cook are reasons to see a doctor.

A broader version of the same idea is a daily check-in for a parent living alone. Did someone leave the stove on can run on the same kitchen phone. The cost per day arithmetic is worked out on its own page.

Start with one lunchtime

Talk to your parent first. Then point a spare phone at the kitchen table and write one sentence about lunch.
