Garage Camera Alerts on Every Bug at Night? Placement, Zones and a Detached Building Without Internet

You have a detached metal garage a few hundred feet from the house. It has power, but no internet, and no phone signal once the doors are shut. Inside are a boat, some equipment and a dirt bike. Your house cameras record, but you switched motion notifications off because every bug at night set them off. Nobody hears about anything until morning.

Why bugs trigger an outdoor camera at night

Turning sensitivity down rarely fixes it. A bug at the lens changes more pixels than a person standing 60 feet away. Any setting that ignores the bug also ignores the person.

Free fixes, in this order

  1. Move the infrared light away from the lens. Turn the camera's own infrared off and light the area from a separate infrared illuminator or a plain white floodlight mounted a few feet from the camera. Insects then gather at the light, not at the lens.
  2. Aim out of the sky. Tilt the camera down so the frame has no sky and no bright wall close to the lens.
  3. Cut the motion zone down. Keep only the garage door and the path someone would walk to it.
  4. Use person detection if the recorder has it. Many newer DVRs can alert on people only. A bug close up can still fool some of them.
  5. Set a schedule. Alerts only for the hours you are not out at the garage yourself.

The general version of this, with headlights, shadows and rain, is on stopping false motion alerts.

Placement beats detection: put a camera inside

A closed garage has nothing moving in it all day. When a camera in there sees a change, someone is in the building.

Aim it at the dirt bike and the door. There is no infrared halo outside the building for insects to circle, and bugs inside a closed garage are rare. If the inside is dark, a small light on a timer or a motion light gives the camera something to see.

Keep one camera outside for the approach if you want. Treat it as the recorder and the inside one as the alarm.

The internet problem, honestly

A metal building blocks most phone signal once the doors are shut. A phone or a cellular camera on its own mobile data inside will drop out, exactly when the doors are closed.

At a few hundred feet with clear line of sight, the usual answer is a point to point wireless bridge. Two small outdoor radios, one on the house and one on the garage, aimed at each other. They carry your home network to the garage with no subscription.

Test the link with the garage doors shut before you buy any cameras. Leave a phone on the garage network for a full evening and check it stays connected. Any app that alerts you needs this link, ours included.

Where a check in plain words fits

AI Vision Monitor does not watch video. A spare phone on a shelf in the garage, on a charger, takes a still photo at an interval you set, from seconds to minutes. A vision model checks that photo against one sentence you wrote, instead of a motion zone:

A person is inside the garage.
Someone is standing next to the dirt bike or touching it.

A moth on the lens is not a person, so it does not match. When the sentence matches, you get a push notification with the snapshot and the verdict in words. The phone can also play a siren, turn on its flashlight, or play a short voice line you recorded yourself. A webhook is available in the web version, for example to turn on a floodlight through a smart plug. The usual setup is an old phone used as a camera.

It checks snapshots at an interval, not every frame. It is a warning layer next to the recorder, not a replacement for it. The DVR keeps the evidence.

The keypad door alarm is a separate thing

A keypad door alarm with a 30 second entry delay is a different product. A standalone panel with a contact on the door, a keypad and a siren does it without any cloud and without internet. The camera layer is for the warning on your phone when someone is inside.

Honest limits

What it costs

Checks are paid for one at a time. The starter pack is 2000 credits for 2.99 euro, and a check costs half a credit or one credit, depending on the model. New accounts get 50 free credits without a card. There is no subscription.

Frequently asked

Why does my camera alert on bugs at night?
At night the camera turns on the infrared LEDs around its lens, and the light pulls insects in. A moth two inches from the lens fills a large part of the picture as a bright blob, and any motion detector that counts changed pixels sees that as a big event. It is worst in the first hours after dusk and near outdoor lights.

Does lowering motion sensitivity stop bug alerts?
Rarely. A bug next to the lens changes more pixels than a person 60 feet away, so a sensitivity low enough to ignore the bug also ignores the person. Moving the infrared light away from the lens and cutting the motion zone down to the door works better.

Should the garage camera go inside or outside?
Inside, if you can only have one. Nothing moves in a closed garage all day, so when the camera fires, someone is in there. There is no infrared halo outside for bugs to circle, and an outside camera can be added later for the approach.

How do I get internet to a detached garage without a subscription?
With line of sight, a point to point wireless bridge is the usual answer: two small outdoor radios, one on the house and one on the garage, aimed at each other. It extends your home network with no monthly fee. Test the link with the garage doors shut before you buy any cameras.

Can an old phone work as a garage camera with no wifi?
Only if it has a connection. A metal building blocks the phone signal when the doors are shut, so a phone on its own mobile data inside is unreliable. Bring your home network to the garage first, then put the phone on a shelf on a charger.

Will an AI camera alert replace my DVR?
No. An AI check looks at snapshots at an interval you set, not every frame, so it is a warning layer. The DVR keeps recording and keeps the evidence. Use both.

Start with one sentence

Get the network to the garage first. Then put a spare phone on a shelf, aimed at the bike and the door, and write one sentence about a person inside. More setups are in all use cases.
