Security Camera Never Shows the Face? Height, Distance and Light

The camera caught someone in the driveway at night. You see a hood and a pair of shoes, never a face, and the police say the clip does not help. Usually the camera is fine. It sits under the eaves, 25 to 35 feet away, looking into the dark.

Why the face is never there

The blur is mostly placement, not pixels.

Free fixes, in this order

  1. Put a camera at head height where people pause. By the door, the car or the mailbox. Where someone stops for a few seconds matters more than where they walk.
  2. Light that spot. A plain porch light or motion light on the exact place they stand does more for a face than a more expensive camera.
  3. Point it along the approach, not across it.
  4. Keep the high camera for the overview. It still shows where someone came from and where they went.
  5. Check how it records. Some cloud cameras only save a clip after motion is detected, so the first seconds are lost. For evidence, use continuous recording or pre-roll.
  6. Test it yourself at night. Walk the path, stop where a visitor would, then watch the clip.

When the camera is for evidence

What usually makes footage useful to police is simple: continuous or pre-roll recording so the whole visit is there, a correct timestamp, and at least one clear frame of a face or a plate. Rules differ by place, so ask the officer on the case what they need, and keep the original files.

A low camera has a cost. A person at the door can reach it and pull it off. Mount it somewhere awkward to grab, or behind a window, or accept that it may be taken and keep the high camera as backup. If you cannot climb a ladder, the low camera is also the one you can charge.

Describing the event in words

AI Vision Monitor adds an alert layer next to the camera you have. On a schedule you set, from every few seconds to every few minutes, it takes a still photograph and a vision model checks it against one sentence you wrote:

A person is standing next to the car in the driveway after 10 pm. People walking along the street do not count.

When it matches, you get a push notification, and the phone can turn on its flashlight, play a siren or play a voice line you recorded. A webhook is available in the web version. Light at that moment does two jobs. It makes the recording on your other camera usable, and a person who sees a light come on tends to look up toward it.

What it costs

Checks are paid for one at a time. The starter pack is 2000 credits for 2.99 euro, and a check costs half a credit on the light model or one credit on the fast model. New accounts get 50 free credits without a card. Limit the schedule to the hours that matter. There is no subscription.

Frequently asked

Why is my security camera footage so blurry at night?
At night the camera switches to infrared and keeps the shutter open longer, so faces turn flat and grey and moving people smear. Compression then removes the fine detail. A light on the spot fixes more than a new camera would.

How high should a security camera be mounted to see faces?
Roughly 5 to 6 feet, near face height, at the place where people stop, such as the door, the car or the mailbox. A camera under the eaves sees the top of a head.

How far can a security camera identify a face?
Distance matters more than resolution. At around 30 feet a face is only a few dozen pixels wide on a 2K camera. Halving the distance gives the face roughly four times the pixels.

Do infrared cameras show faces?
Up close, sometimes, but infrared images are grey and flat, and skin often blows out to white. A plain visible light on the spot gives a much more recognizable picture.

Can police use blurry camera footage?
It can show when someone came and where they went, but identifying a person usually needs a clear face or a plate, with correct timestamps. Ask the officer on the case what they need.

Will an old phone work as a camera at head height?
Yes, as an alert camera. A spare phone on a charger behind a window at head height can check the spot and turn on its flashlight when it sees someone. It checks snapshots, not continuous video, so keep a recording camera for evidence.

Start with one sentence

Put a spare phone on a charger behind a window at head height, facing the spot where people stop, and write one sentence about someone standing there at night.
