The Squirrel Keeps Getting on the Bird Feeder

The feeder is on a pole, there is a baffle on the pole, and the squirrel is on the feeder anyway. People reach for grease next, or a bigger baffle. Most of the time the baffle is fine and the problem is where it sits.

Why the baffle is not working

A grey squirrel can jump four to five feet straight up from the ground and much further sideways from a fence or a branch. A baffle only works if it is the first thing a squirrel reaches and there is nothing above it to land on.

• Mounted halfway up the pole. This is the one in most photos. The squirrel does not climb past the baffle, it jumps past it and lands on the bare pole above. Move the baffle up so it sits directly under the feeder, top edge about four to five feet off the ground.
• A launch point within reach. A fence, a deck rail, a wall or the house itself within eight to ten feet lets the squirrel skip the pole entirely.
• Something overhead. A branch above the feeder turns the baffle into decoration, because the squirrel just drops onto the roof of the feeder.
• A flat disc it can grip. A long tube or a wobbling cone baffle is harder to get a hold on than a small flat disc.

The five and ten feet rule

Plenty of yards do not have a spot that is ten feet from everything. There the squirrel will reach the feeder sometimes, and what is left is noticing when it does and making it unpleasant to stay.

A camera that reacts instead of just recording

Smart feeder cameras will show you a very nice clip of the squirrel eating everything. What they do not do is anything about it.

Setting it up

1. Use a spare phone. Any handset with a working camera and wifi, plugged in. No SIM needed.
2. Frame the feeder and the top of the pole. The squirrel has to be visible where it matters, not somewhere in a wide shot of the lawn.
3. Put the phone where the sound will reach. A phone behind a closed window plays the siren into your kitchen, not at the squirrel. A sheltered spot outside, or an open window, works better for the sound. For notifications alone, behind glass is fine.
4. Write what does not count. "A squirrel on the feeder, birds do not count, a squirrel on the ground under the feeder does not count" gives far fewer false alerts than "watch for squirrels".
5. Pick the interval for the raid. Squirrel visits last minutes, so a check every two minutes catches most of them. Repeat alerts are throttled to one every five minutes, so a squirrel that stays does not turn into a siren every two minutes.

What it costs

No subscription. A check is half a credit on the cheap model, and the starter pack is 2000 credits for 2.99 euro.

A check every two minutes through a twelve hour day is 180 credits a day, roughly eight euro a month. Every five minutes is 72 credits a day, about three euro a month. Honest limits

• Squirrels get used to sounds. A noise that never comes with a consequence stops working after a while. Changing the sound helps, and fixing the baffle position helps more.
• It checks, it does not watch. A squirrel that grabs a mouthful between two checks is not seen.
• It needs light and internet. The analysis runs on a server, and at night a feeder is mostly dark.
• It does not replace a baffle in the right place. Put the baffle right first. The camera is for the yard where no spot is ten feet from everything.
